Empty Nest

For the last six weeks or so a bird has made her home in a nest by our back door. We use this door a lot, but every time we’ve walked out of it we’ve forgotten she’s there and shit ourselves as she’s dive bombed at our heads, to warn us off her babies. Once a day, when the mum is safely out the way, I peek in to check on the chicks. I’ve watched them turn from smooth blue eggs into weird, wormlike creatures and finally into beautiful tiny birds. I’ve just been to look in on them now but the nest is empty. Is this how it happens when your kids leave home too? There, there, there, not there?
